Hair loss in autumn

Hair loss – did you know that losing between 50-100 hairs a day is quite normal?

During the autumn months, you may also notice more hair loss than usual. Why is that?

Don’t panic, it’s not a sign that you’re about to lose all your hair. It is actually totally normal.

A typical strand of hair has a lifecycle of between 24-72 months where it grows normally. We have a natural hair cycle where we have hair growth and rest periods. During the growth periods, new hairs are produced. The rest period is called ‘telogen’. After two to four months, the hair root starts a new growth cycle.

Research suggests that over late summer and early autumn, the telogen phases are more frequent which results in more hair falling out. This can be caused by a number of factors including intense sun radiation.

Your scalp’s response to too much exposure to the sun is to switch to the telogen phase as a protection mechanism and as a result, these hairs fall out. The more your hair and scalp are exposed, the more hair loss will occur during autumn.

How to manage hair loss:

  • Try and spend more time in the shade where possible
  • Wear a sunhat
  • Try and keep to a healthy diet and good intake of water
  • Use a good hair conditioning treatment
  • Have a scalp massage to rejuvenate the blood flow
  • Take additional balancing supplements to help aid your hair growth such as our Hair, Skin & Nails capsules

If you are experiencing significant hair loss, it is advisable that you consult your doctor.
